The producers of Home Alone 4: Taking Back the House decided to bring back the original characters, just not the original stars. Linz ( Max Keeble’s Big Move) took over for Macaulay Culkin as a new character, Alex Pruitt. This is not the first time a “new” Kevin has been introduced into the Home Alone franchise. Yates will not be assuming the role of Kevin McCallister, instead, he will be playing a new character named Max. Mazer chose JoJo Rabbit breakout star Archie Yates to fill Culkin’s shoes, but there is a catch. The big question fans were posing, after their initial shock that Disney would have the stones to remake such a classic, was who would be the new Kevin McCallister? As the world is well aware, Macaulay Culkin played the mischievous Kevin in the first two Home Alone movies. While they are not John Hughes, their background is firmly built around comedy, with both writers having served on Saturday Night Live as well as Maya & Marty. Mazer directed Home Sweet Home Alone from a script penned by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. His last feature film was the 2016 Dirty Grandpa. Mazer is probably best known as the long-time writing partner of Sacha Baron Cohen as the two have collaborated on Ali G Indahouse, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, Brüno, and The Dictator. Shortly after, Dan Mazer was brought on board to direct the film. Only a few months after Disney took over Fox, then Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that, indeed, Disney had begun work on a new Home Alone. DIRECTING AND WRITING THE HOME ALONE REBOOT One franchise Disney was keen on was the Home Alone series, so they decided it was time to first rewind and then refresh audiences with their version of Home Alone. When Disney purchased Fox in March 2019, it was only a matter of time before the Mouse House would start looking at all the successful Fox entities and plan accordingly as to which property would be ripe for a reimagining, a remake, a reboot, or a re-whatever.

The Home Alone reboot trailer dropped in October 2021 with the first look revealing a familiar story and one familiar face. So, how did we get to this awful place, and please, when will it stop? Let’s take a look. What seemed like it could be a win considering the excellent cast and silly premise just ended up not working at all. If that wasn’t bad enough, then the fan reaction is about all you really need to know, because who really agrees with critics? Fans chimed in with a thoroughly unimpressed 11%. The film fell flat with critics, as they graded it out with a 16% favorable rating on Rotten Tomatoes. He is a poor imitation, as is the married couple (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delany) who try to fill the shoes of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s Sticky Bandits. The film stars Archie Yates ( Jojo Rabbit) as Max, a Kevin McCallister wanna-be. In fact, it hit such a flat note from all sides, it may have been the franchise’s death knell. But Home Sweet Home Alone did not jibe with Home Alone fans or its critics. How could there not be? The simple mention of Home Alone sends fans into a nostalgic trance of heated doorknobs, flying paint cans, and tarantulas – everything a Christmas eve should include.
It’s not like there wasn’t at least some mild interest when Disney announced they were rebooting the franchise. HOME ALONE REBOOT DOES TERRIBLE WITH CRITICS
